From Lynne Eldridge MD, your Guide to Lung Cancer

The words you hear from your doctor after you're diagnosed with lung cancer may sound like a foreign language -- one which you never wished to learn.

It's wonderful that, unlike in the past, many patients often have instant access to their medical records via a patient portal.  Not only can you learn more than in the past, but reading through your records gives you the opportunity to detect any medical errors.  Yet understanding the words in your pathology and radiology reports can be very confusing.  What do some of these terms mean?

Best wishes until next week,

Dr. Lynne

Understanding Your Lung Cancer Pathology Report

Of all reports, your lung cancer pathology report is probably the most confusing.  Words like "gross specimen" surgical margins" and more can leave you scratching your head on top of the anxiety.

What is Atelectasis?

Many people experience atelectasis at some time during their lung cancer journey.  What exactly does this mean, what are the causes, and how is it treated?

Understanding Cancer Cachexia

Both the word cachexia - and the symptom of weight loss despite eating adequate calories - are confusing.  Yet this syndrome which is estimated to be responsible for roughly 20% of cancer deaths is often ignored and misunderstood.

Lung Cancer TNM Staging

In addition to staging you may be familiar with - for example stages 1 through 4 - doctors often use TNM staging to describe a lung cancer and recommend treatment.  What do these letters mean?
