With the 86th Annual Academy Awards this Sunday evening, we've got movies on our minds as we head into the weekend. But even as we root for some of the year's biggest blockbusters and indie flicks, we can't help but notice at least one movie genre MIA in the list of nominees. That's why today's mission is to honor a group of films (and an entire About.com site!) that doesn't always get the love at the box office it often deserves.

That's why he created the four major rules of war films that filmmakers should abide by when presenting these historical conflicts to the world audience.
Of course, in war and in film, there are winners and there are losers. These 12 films are the losers as the weakest in the war movies genre. Sorry, Ben Affleck, but we're calling out Pearl Harbor in this one.
We hope we've inspired you to do some more recon of this complex and compelling movie genre in the coming year. To get started, check out this list of the brand new war films hitting theaters in 2014.
