News: What Gay Marriage Means for Health Insurance



There’s one side effect of this week’s marriage equality ruling by the Supreme Court: health insurance.

Last week, less than half of all employers that offer health benefits made the insurance available to married same sex partners, while practically all of them did so for spouses.

It’s a little unclear whether employers now must offer coverage to same sex spouses, but a study released on Friday showed a tremendous surge in same sex spouses being covered by employer-sponsored healthcare following past legalization in states like New York.
