| | I have 2 sons who think their mom has leaky tear ducts tonight. It began on Thursday night when I took them to see Phantom on the Opera on Broadway, before meeting with my fellow expert writers and staff in Times Square, and continued tonight as we passed by the Statue of Liberty on a sunset cruise. But those tears weren't sentimental thoughts. They had everything to do with those with lung cancer who I care so much about. More about those tears below... Best wishes until next week, Dr. Lynne | | The Saddening Stigma of a Lung Cancer Diagnosis Okay. The answer to my tears at Phantom was due to this. I made a quick jump from "the phantom" experiencing rejection due to his facial disfigurement, to those with lung cancer who are often treated differently from those with, say, breast cancer. As if the disease is in some way "dirty" or at least self-inflicted by smoking. Thankfully my children are old enough to know that those tears will persist at times like this until the stigma of lung cancer is erased, and are okay with that.
| Genetic Testing/Molecular Profiling in Lung Cancer My tears as we listened to God Bless America while circumnavigating the Statue of Liberty tonight were of a different nature. They were tears of joy and relief that in the United States, for at least some people with lung cancer, we are now making significant progress in the understanding of acquired genetic mutations associated with lung cancer, and subsequent treatments that can now tackle those abnormalities specifically.
| BAC - Bronchioloalveolar Carcinoma You may have heard that lung cancer is decreasing in the United States - and that's true for men. But did know that one type of lung cancer -- one that is more common in women who have never smoked - is increasing?
