From Lynne Eldridge MD, your Guide to Lung Cancer

This weeks newsletter begins with ideas that you or your loved ones can turn to when your're feeling gloomy as you face the roller coaster of cancer.  Some of these may even bring joy to those not living with cancer.  But then we turn to a little talked about but grave concern for those with cancer - the considerable risk of suicide.  A risk that is present for nearly anyone with any kind of cancer, at any stage of the disease.  Please take time to read this article.

Best wishes until next week,

Dr. Lynne

The High Risk of Suicide in Cancer Patients

Suicide is something we talk about in whispers, but should be paying a lot more attention to in people with cancer.  You would think that suicide would be a risk on someone who has lost all hope, but the truth is; suicide is common in people with cancer, especially lung cancer, and often occurs early; when treatment is still working.  Studies tell us that 6% of people with cancer experience suicidal ideation, that is, thinking about, considering, or planning for suicide. Take time to read this article to learn the risk factors, what can be done to prevent suicide, the warning signs that someone may be considering suicide, and where you can turn for help.

The Laughter Cure For Stress

This fun article written by my friend Elizabeth Scott, the Stress Expert for About.com, talks about the health effects of laughter, and how it can be a great way to distract yourself from the negative emotions that go with cancer treatment, and give you a more lighthearted perspective.  She then talks about how to bring humor and laughter into your life, even if that means you have to "fake it until you make it."
